Exposed only on low tide, it's surrounded by tropical reefs teaming with colourful corals and fish. To reach the sandbank, you first sail an hour and a half over the Indian Ocean.
After a wonderful day on mesmerizing Mafia Island, there is nothing better than to jump aboard a traditional dhow for an impressive Mafian sunset at sea. The dhow departs at 5:30 pm with a waiter and drinks on board, after which the captain gently sails you through Mafia's aquamarine waters.
The Blue Lagoon is an enormous natural infinity pool that changes with the tides. Located near Juani Island in the Mafia archipelago, the Blue Lagoon makes for a perfect trip for anyone spending a few days on Mafia. A boat takes you in 30 minutes to this unique spot, through a channel bordered by lush green mangrove trees.
Chole Island is a small island just across a small channel from Mafia Island. It belongs to the Mafia Archipelago and makes for a nice visit because of its history, its ruins and the lush vegetation covering the island. After a short boat ride you land on Chole's beach, after which you walk along the ruins to a fruit bat sanctuary.
The last remnants of the ancient city of Kua lay nestled among the overgrown forests in the south of Juani Island, part of the Mafia Archipelago. The ruins date back to the 12th century, but it's not clear why the city ceased to exist. This sandbank slowly appears when the tide starts to go out, revealing itself for a few hours before the Indian Ocean swallows it up again. A traditional dhow takes you to the heart of the marine park for some snorkelling.
Near the archipelago of Mafia, you can witness the seasonal migration of humpback whales as they move between the warm waters of the Indian Ocean and the cooler feeding grounds closer to South Africa. Step on a traditional dhow to go spot these giants of the ocean.
