Embark on a 4 night fishing expedition through Lavushi Manda National Park

Brief Safari Overview

Dates: 4 nights between May - November 2017   |   Group size: 4 anglers per group

Very few people have fished this portion of the Lukulu River, which is a tributary of the Congo River. However, the few who have, reported great catches of 'Congo' yellowfish (up to 5 kg) and bream. We invite you to help us discover the true fishing potential of the fishery for fly and lure anglers.

DAY 1: LAVUSHI MANDA NATIONAL PARK

Arrival in Lavushi Manda National Park

Lavushi Manda National Park is situated in the Muchinga Province of Zambia. Driving time will take you approximately 7 hours from Lusaka to the Park entry gate. Accommodation will be at Mumbatuta Camp is in 4 Meru-style en-suite tents. Each tent has a simple cabinet for clothes and the ablutions consist of a wash basin, flush toilets and bucket shower system where staff will fill the tank with enough hot water for a shower whenever you require.

DAY 2 - 5 : LAVUSHI MANDA NATIONAL PARK

Fishing in Lavushi - The Species

First and foremost, our target is the fish locally known as mpifu or ‘Congo’ Yellowfish. This species is Labeobarbus stappersi and is only known to occur in the Congo river basin system and there is no known official English name. Other attractions include the nembwe and thinface largemouth bream.

DAY 2 - 5 : LAVUSHI MANDA NATIONAL PARK

Fishing in Lavushi - The Lukulu River

We fish the Lukulu River in between Mumbatuta and Kapundalupili Falls – this stretch of the river is what is known as a ‘high order’ fishery meaning it responds very quickly to local rainfall patterns. It also means that the water available for commercial angling is limited and needs stringent management and protection.

The Lavushi Tented Camp provides 4 single fishing kayaks off which most of our fishing happens. The river is heavily vegetated and so bank fishing is near impossible from all but a few places. It is also a small river meaning casting needs to be accurate!

Wildlife and Birding

Crocodiles and hippo due occur in Lavushi Manda and in the Lukulu River so we encourage anglers to be extremely vigilant whilst fishing. If you are unsure about a piece of water, speak to a scout to ascertain the dangers of the wildlife and we always recommend watching your intended fishing water for 5-10 minutes quietly for sign of hippo or crocodile. This also gives you a good chance to see what the fish movement is like anyway! The birdlife is spectacular and you have an excellent chance of sighting African finfoot, Palmnut vultures, Narina Trogans, African Broadbill and Ross’s Turaco to name a few whilst fishing.
